Life’s A Riot

BrixtonFor anyone who’s interested in music, social history and business smarts, I massively recommend this book. It’s the story of the bloke who bought a derelict building in one of London’s roughest areas for a quid and turned it into one of the coolest music venues in the world. Simon Parkes was a one-armed kid from a posh family when he kick-started it all. He survived being stabbed, threatened by gangsters, held up at gunpoint and intimidated by the IRA. He never backed down or sold out, putting on awesome shows by everyone from The Clash and The Smiths to Public Enemy, The Pixies, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. Fascinating, inspiring and full of brilliant chutzpah-filled anecdotes.
